Hobbitenango is a full-on leap into a world that feels straight out of a fantasy novel.

Nestled in the Guatemalan highlands, this quirky eco-park is a delightful mash-up of nature, adventure, and a bit of hobbit-inspired magic. If you’re a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, then this place is a must-visit!

Visitors are treated to charming Hobbit homes with round doors, thatched roofs, sweeping views of majestic volcanoes, and a range of activities that will make you feel like you’re living in your slice of Middle-Earth.

Hobbitenango is the ultimate getaway for solo adventurers and group travelers looking for something truly unique to experience in Guatemala.

Ready to see what all the fuss is about? Let’s dive in.

What is Hobbitenango?

Tucked away in the lush hills of Vuelta Grande, just 20 minutes from Antigua, Hobbitenango is a 26-acre eco-park that feels like something straight out of a fantasy novel.

Inspired by the whimsical world of The Lord of the Rings, it’s a place where you can step into a world of hobbit homes, epic views, and adventure, all while embracing nature.

The park was founded in 2015 and created out of a love for the outdoors, adventure, and a desire to create a space that allows people to truly unplug from the chaos of daily life.

But Hobbitenango is more than offering a great fantastical escape, it’s also about reconnecting with the natural beauty of Guatemala. All around are views of towering volcanoes to rolling hills; the landscapes here are jaw-dropping.

Aside from the views, the park is packed with outdoor activities to keep you busy, you can swing over the valley on the region's largest tree swing, hike the surrounding trails, or simply relax in one of the charming hobbit-style houses.

Getting There

From Antigua

Getting to Hobbitenango is a breeze if you're based in Antigua. The park offers daily shuttle services to and from Antigua, making it super convenient for visitors.

Shuttles run at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 4:00 PM, and return shuttles from Hobbitenango are available at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM, and 5:00 PM.

The round-trip ticket, which includes the entrance fee, costs Q95 per person (roughly $12).

It's an affordable and comfortable way to reach this magical destination without the hassle of navigating the roads yourself.

By Car

If you're feeling adventurous and have access to a car, you can drive yourself to Hobbitenango. However, keep in mind that the final stretch of the road is steep, and it’s recommended to have a 4x4 vehicle.

If you don’t have one, no worries — you can park at the base and take a shuttle up to the entrance, which is part of the experience. Parking is free, but make sure to take note of shuttle schedules, as they can get crowded during peak times.

Activities and Attractions

Once you arrive at Hobbitenango, get ready to be transported into a world straight out of a fairytale. There’s no shortage of exciting activities and attractions to keep you entertained.

Hobbit Houses

The hobbit homes are, of course, one of the park’s major draws. Take a stroll through the "Shire" and feel like you're a hobbit in a little village tucked away from the world.

These tiny, charming dwellings with round doors and thatched roofs are nestled into the landscape, and they offer the perfect photo opportunities for anyone looking to capture their Middle-earth dreams.

Giant Swing

If you're the type who craves a thrill, the giant swing is calling your name. Swinging high above the valley, this is the largest swing in Central America and offers an exhilarating experience with stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes.

However, be warned: there is a 200-pound weight limit for safety, so make sure to check the requirements before jumping in!

Archery and Axe Throwing

Channel your inner elf or dwarf and engage in some fun, medieval-style competition. Whether you're honing your archery skills or trying your hand at axe throwing, these activities are a great way to add a little friendly rivalry to your visit. The cost is minimal — Q10 ($2) for 10 throws — making it a fun, affordable way to break up the day.

Mini Golf

If you’re looking for something a bit more laid-back, why not play a round of mini-golf? The seven-hole course is set against the stunning backdrop of the volcanoes and offers a peaceful yet fun way to spend some time with friends or family.

El Coloso (The Giant Hand)

No visit to Hobbitenango would be complete without checking out the iconic stone hand sculpture known as “El Coloso.”

This massive, outstretched hand extends over the cliff, providing jaw-dropping views of the surrounding landscape. It’s also a must-see photo op, so don’t forget your camera!

Tips for Group Travelers to Hobbitenango

Planning a getaway to Hobbitenango with your favorite crew? Lucky you! Here are some insider tips to make your trip even more epic.

Book Ahead to Beat the Crowds

Hobbitenango is one of Guatemala’s coolest destinations, so weekends and holidays can get packed. If you're visiting with a group, make sure to book your accommodations and activities ahead of time.

Secure those hobbit houses and ensure you have shuttle spots to avoid the disappointment of arriving only to find everything sold out.

Bring Layers and Comfy Shoes

Because Hobbitenango is located high up in the Guatemalan highlands, the weather can be unpredictable. The mornings and evenings can be quite chilly, especially when the sun starts setting behind the volcanoes.

Bring a jacket or sweater to keep cozy while you take in the stunning views. It’s also a good idea to pack comfortable shoes, as the park has plenty of walking and exploring to do. You’ll need sturdy footwear for all the fun (and the occasional uneven terrain).

Embrace the "Disconnect to Reconnect" Vibe

At Hobbitenango, there’s no Wi-Fi, which might feel like a shock at first, but this is one of the best parts of the experience!

The park’s motto is "disconnect to reconnect," encouraging visitors to unplug and fully immerse in nature and each other. So, put the phones down and soak in the beauty around you.

It’s the perfect chance to bond with your group, whether you’re hiking, enjoying a meal together, or just watching the sunset over the volcanoes. You’ll be surprised at how much more you’ll enjoy the moment without digital distractions.

Sunset is a MUSt-See!

If you’ve got a bit of flexibility, make sure to stay at Hobbitenango to catch one of the most jaw-dropping sunsets you’ll ever see.

While the sunset is worth the wait, many of the activities (like the giant swing and the iconic hand sculpture) start closing around 5 PM. If you want to soak up the sunset and experience the park without the crowds, staying overnight is a game-changer.

By booking a night in one of Hobbitenango’s charming hobbit homes, you get to enjoy the sunset in peace and then wake up to a quiet park where you and your group can enjoy the best spots without fighting for space.

Don’t Miss Out on Group Discounts

When traveling with a squad, saving a little cash goes a long way. Whether it’s for shuttles, meals, or activities, be sure to ask about group discounts. Many places at Hobbitenango offer deals for larger groups, meaning you can enjoy all the fun without breaking the bank

Get Used to the Altitude First

If you're coming from the lowland areas of Guatemala, remember that Hobbitenango sits at 7,800 feet above sea level. That altitude might take a little getting used to, especially if you’re not accustomed to higher elevations. Altitude sickness is not something to take lightly.

You can spend a day or two in Antigua. Antigua is a lovely spot to explore, with its colonial charm and local cafés it’s the perfect place to relax before heading up to the park.

Once you’re acclimated, you’ll have more energy to dive into all the activities Hobbitenango has to offer!

Why Hobbitenango Should Be Your Next Group Getaway

Why pick Hobbitenango for your next adventure? Well, because it's not your average tourist stop, it’s an escape into nature, fantasy, and pure fun.

Are you a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan? Then prepare to have your Hobbit dreams come true! But even if Tolkien’s world isn’t your thing, Hobbitenango delivers an unforgettable vibe with its breathtaking views, quirky accommodations, and a ton of activities that’ll keep you and your whole group entertained.
