Guatemala is a place that stays with you.
The vibrant colors, the hum of life, the towering volcanoes, and the cobblestone streets of Antigua, all leave a lasting mark.
But what truly makes Guatemala unforgettable are the people, especially the women.
They are the heartbeat of this country, working hard every day to create better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities.
For me, this mission is deeply personal. As a single mother, I faced overwhelming challenges, especially after losing my daughter’s father when I was just 21 years old. At times I worked tirelessly, only to hit unexpected roadblocks that left me struggling.
Accepting help wasn’t easy, but I will always be grateful for the kindness of those who supported me in my hardest moments. Those experiences shaped me and ignited a passion to give back.
That’s why I’ve made it my mission to focus on supporting women and families with children through Traveling Women Official. I know firsthand what it’s like to need a hand up, and I want to make sure women, especially mothers, have the resources, encouragement, and opportunities they need to thrive.
If you are also passionate about this, you can make a difference while having an unforgettable experience during travel by volunteering in women’s cooperatives and NGOs in Guatemala.
Let’s dive into how you can be part of this mission.
Why Guatemala?
I get it, Guatemala might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of Central America. It’s often overshadowed by the allure of Costa Rica or the popularity of Mexico.
But let me tell you, Guatemala is a hidden gem. Its beauty is jaw-dropping. You’ll find lush highlands, misty volcanoes, and colorful markets that look like a painting.
More importantly, the people here are a testament to resilience. Women, in particular, face challenges like poverty, limited education, and restricted job opportunities, but they are also at the forefront of change.
Women’s cooperatives and NGOs play a vital role in empowering them and providing skills, education, and financial independence.
This is where travelers like you and me, come in.
By volunteering, you’re not just seeing a new place, you’re becoming part of a movement to uplift and support incredible women who are working toward a better future.

How to Volunteer at Women’s Cooperatives and NGOs in Guatemala
Women’s Cooperatives
Women’s cooperatives in Guatemala are something special. Imagine a group of women, many of them from indigenous communities, coming together to support each other, create sustainable businesses, and empower one another.
These cooperatives often focus on traditional crafts like weaving, pottery, and coffee production, all while preserving their cultural heritage. Aside from creating beautiful products, the women here create opportunities for themselves and their families.
The goal of the cooperatives isn’t just to make money and help the women in their livelihood. They focus on preserving ancient traditions, supporting the local economy, and creating a sense of pride and independence for the community.
So, if you’re someone who’s into arts, culture, and community, working with these cooperatives will truly tug at your heartstrings.
Here are a couple of cooperatives that stand out and could use your help:
Trama Textiles – Empowering Maya Women Through Weaving
Trama Textiles is more than just a cooperative, it’s a powerful sisterhood of over 400 Indigenous Maya women from 17 communities across Guatemala’s Western Highlands.
Through the art of backstrap-loom weaving, these talented artisans are preserving centuries-old traditions while creating sustainable income for their families. Every vibrant textile they produce tells a story, one that captures heritage, resilience, and hope.
Volunteering with Trama Textiles
Aside from lending a hand, you’ll be part of their mission to promote fair trade and celebrate Indigenous craftsmanship. Volunteers help with everything from social media and marketing to product design, fundraising, and photography.
If you’ve got a creative streak or a passion for ethical fashion, this is your chance to use your skills for a meaningful cause.
One of the most inspiring parts of volunteering with Trama is the chance to connect with the artisans themselves. You’ll get to witness their incredible craftsmanship firsthand. And if you’re lucky, you might even learn some weaving techniques directly from these masters of their craft.

Unidas Para Vivir Mejor (UPAVIM) – Empowering Women in Guatemala City
Unidas Para Vivir Mejor (UPAVIM), meaning "United for a Better Life," is a women's cooperative located in the La Esperanza community on the outskirts of Guatemala City.
Founded in 1988, UPAVIM began as a group of women seeking to improve their living conditions and has since grown into a multifaceted organization offering various community services.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Volunteering with UPAVIM provides a unique opportunity to engage directly with the community. They're always looking for help in the following areas:
Education: Assist in teaching English, tutoring students, or supporting the daycare and after-school programs.
Healthcare: Contribute to the community clinic by supporting health education initiatives or assisting medical staff.
Artisan Workshops: Collaborate with the women's crafts cooperative, helping to design and market handmade products.
Volunteers are expected to cover their living expenses, with affordable housing options available within the community. There are no participation fees, making it accessible for those passionate about contributing their skills and time.

NGOs in Guatemala – Making a Meaningful Impact
Guatemala is also home to some incredible non-profit organizations that are working tirelessly to improve the lives of women and children, particularly those from rural and marginalized communities.
Volunteering with these NGOs is a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture, learn firsthand about the challenges faced by communities, and make a lasting difference.
I’m excited to share a few of these incredible organizations where you can offer your time and talents to make a difference.
Whether it’s through health programs, helping women break the cycle of poverty, or giving young people the tools they need to succeed, these NGOs are doing transformative work.
Partner for Surgery Guatemala
Website: Partner for Surgery
Partner for Surgery is an incredible non-profit dedicated to bringing life-changing medical care to remote Guatemalan communities.
Their mission is to bridge the gap between rural populations and vital healthcare services by offering mobile medical missions, surgical programs, and nutritional assistance for children who need surgery.
One of their most impactful programs ensures that children meet the necessary weight requirements before undergoing surgery. Many families in rural Guatemala lack access to proper nutrition, and malnourishment can prevent children from receiving and recovering from the medical procedures they need.
To address this, the organization provides food baskets that give these kids a better chance at recovery after surgery.
I had the honor of volunteering at one of their fundraisers, and I was blown away by the dedication of everyone involved. The funds raised went directly to providing these food baskets, helping children safely go through surgery and recover.
If healthcare is something you care about, volunteering with Partner for Surgery will leave a lasting mark. Whether you assist with medical missions, fundraising, or patient outreach, you’ll be part of a team providing hope and healing to those who need it most.

Hecho Con Las Manos
Website: Hecho Con Las Manos
Hecho Con Las Manos (Made With Hands) is an inspiring project that empowers women in rural Guatemala by teaching them valuable skills such as weaving, sewing, and crafting various products.
These products are then sold in the organization’s store in Antigua, with all the profits going directly to the women who created them. The impact of this work cannot be overstated, as many of these women work long hours in difficult conditions, earning a mere $6.50 per day to support their families.
I had the chance to visit several villages outside of Antigua, where I met the founder, Vecany Sanchez. I learned firsthand about the incredible work Hecho Con Las Manos is doing to uplift women in these rural areas.
The women’s involvement in the organization not only provides them with much-needed income but also helps them develop a sense of independence and confidence as they learn and perfect their craft.
Right now, Hecho Con Las Manos needs financial support for materials, which are needed to allow women to continue creating their products. Your donation can help provide the resources they need to continue their incredible work and help uplift their families.
If you’re interested in helping support this powerful initiative, please reach out to Hecho Con Las Manos or email founder, Vecany Sanchez directly to contribute to their cause.

Water4Life Global
Website: Water4Life Global
Water4Life Global is doing fantastic work in Guatemala by providing clean water to families in need and also encouraging women through education and leadership.
I recently had the honor of volunteering with Water4Life Global in the community of San Juan. This organization does more than just distribute water filters, they educate families on proper filtration use, maintenance of the systems, and the importance of clean water.
Each demonstration is conducted in the community’s native language, ensuring that the information is fully understood and can be effectively implemented.
During our visit, 150 water filters were delivered to families in need, significantly improving their daily lives. The most inspiring part? Many of the individuals leading these efforts are local Guatemalan women, who are not only earning a fair wage but also stepping into leadership roles within their communities.
If you’re passionate about clean water access and women’s empowerment, consider supporting Water4Life Global through volunteering or donations.

The God’s Child Project
Website: The God’s Child Project
The God’s Child Project aims to break the cycle of poverty in Guatemala by providing comprehensive aid to vulnerable children and families. They offer education, healthcare, housing, and a range of community development programs aimed at helping families rise above poverty.
Their Dreamer Center (Asociación Nuestros Ahijados in Antigua Guatemala) program is where children receive the education, healthcare, and nutrition they need to overcome their difficult circumstances. Many of these children come from situations of extreme hardship, and the Dreamer Center gives them a safe space to learn, grow, and build a better future.
Beyond education, The God’s Child Project offers maternal and infant care programs, legal support for victims of abuse, and vocational training to help families become self-sufficient.
They also have a great housing program that helps build homes for families living in extreme poverty, ensuring they have a safe and dignified place to live.
If you’re looking for a way to make a difference, volunteering with The God’s Child Project offers opportunities to teach, assist with healthcare initiatives, or even help construct homes. Every contribution, whether time or financial support, directly impacts the lives of Guatemalan families in need.

Mimariposa Foundation
Website: Mimariposa Foundation
During my time in Guatemala, I had the privilege of visiting three families alongside Mieke Blankers, the founder of Mimariposa Foundation.
For over 24 years, this incredible organization has been providing school supplies, uniforms, and educational resources to children from low-income families. Thanks to the dedication of Mieke and the generosity of sponsors, hundreds of kids have gained access to quality education and brighter futures.
How You Can Help
For just $181 USD per year, you can sponsor a primary school student, while secondary school sponsorship is $259 USD annually.
Your support covers uniforms, shoes, a backpack, gym clothes, and all school supplies. You’ll also receive photos, school reports, and personal notes or drawings from the child you sponsor, making the connection deeply personal and rewarding.
Beyond sponsorship, extra donations go a long way. With additional contributions, Mimariposa provides water filters, blankets, and mattresses to families in need.
If you’re looking for a heartfelt way to make a real impact, consider supporting Mimariposa. Whether you sponsor a child or make a one-time donation, you’ll be changing lives in a meaningful and lasting way.

What Can You Do as a Volunteer?
So, you’re probably wondering, “What will I actually be doing?” Well, there are so many ways to get involved, and each opportunity is meaningful in its own right.
Most organizations have specific needs but you can find that most will appreciate any help they can get. Whether you’re a professional or someone who just wants to help out, your skills will be put to good use.
Teaching and Business Development
A lot of cooperatives and NGOs need help with things like business strategy, marketing, and education.
If you have a background in any of this, you can assist with teaching financial literacy, helping cooperatives build their brand, or running workshops to empower local women with leadership skills.
Artisanal Support and Fair Trade Advocacy
Love working with your hands? Volunteering at a cooperative can give you the chance to learn traditional Guatemalan crafts like weaving, pottery, or textile design.
You can also help these artisans expand their reach by helping with product design or assisting with the fair trade certification process.
Women’s Health and Wellness
Those with a background in healthcare, wellness, or nutrition can help NGOs with health clinics, education on maternal health, or even support local midwives with training and resources.
Many communities in rural Guatemala don’t have easy access to healthcare, so your contribution here could make a big difference.
Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Farming
Guatemala is rich in natural beauty, and protecting that beauty is a priority for many organizations. You can help with sustainable farming practices, reforestation, or water conservation as these efforts can help preserve the environment for future generations.
Conclusion
Volunteering in Guatemala is more than giving back, it’s about becoming part of a movement.
Whether it’s providing life-saving medical care, empowering women with skills, or giving girls the tools they need to lead, these organizations are changing the future of Guatemala.
As a traveler looking to give back, volunteering with or donating to these organizations can make a significant difference. It’s an opportunity to witness the beauty of the country and its people while also becoming a part of something much bigger than yourself.
